I have a hate/tolerate relationship with myspace. It is a big pile of cold fusion on top of a criminally poor operating system that scales like s**t. It mangles code samples and what you are working on. It looses things frequently. It is insecure enough to allow the script kiddies to try to sell us sex that we don't want. And Just after being sued for infesting us all with malware it was purchased by Rupert Murdoch.
And yet it touches connects me to people who I would otherwise loose altogether. It forms communities that I could not otherwise form myself. I use it to promote myself as an artist and a musician and as a blogging engine.
If you look at the modifications and other creative presentations that most people have made of their pages it stands an incredible example of the power of Cascading Style Sheets.
As a programmer, a network administrator and a systems administrator I have tried to look at myspace from a technical perspective. After spending 2 christmas seasons in a row on a simillarly architechted system waking up every few hours and rebooting a server I offered to help tom look at some or the early issues that the site. He promptly dropped my first account off of his freinds list. That account was spammed off of the net .
These days I leave tom alone as he has enough issues based on the technical decisions that he made years ago. Here you will find my notes on my own relation ship to myspace.
